7 Hacks to Play Like It's Spring All Summer

Summer's here in all its fiery glory. The days are long, the brews are cold, but let's be honest — those scorching afternoon temperatures can turn a relaxing round of golf into a sweaty struggle faster than you can say "mulligan."

But with this one-stop guide to conquering the heat and keeping your cool (literally and figuratively) on the course this summer, you’ll face these scorching summer temps with a newfound confidence.

This ain't your grandpappy's shade umbrella and a lukewarm beer situation. We're talking cutting-edge strategies, battle-tested tips, and enough pro wisdom to have you feeling like a seasoned desert golfer (minus the questionable tan lines).

Grab a seat, crank up the AC, and get ready to dominate the summer heat like a champ.

7. Dress for Success

Let's face it, those heavy cotton pants and long-sleeved polos might offer some sun protection, but they'll also leave you feeling like a walking sauna. Ditch the bulky clothes and opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics. Think moisture-wicking polos and shorts that allow for air circulation.

Pro tip: Look for clothes with built-in UPF protection for an extra layer of defense against the sun's harsh rays. Remember, you're aiming for comfort and sun safety, not a fashion show — although a little style never hurts.

6. Hydration is Your New Best Friend

Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink? That's a recipe for disaster on a hot day. Dehydration is a sneaky enemy that can zap your energy, mess with your focus, and leave you feeling like you're swinging a tree trunk instead of a golf club.

Here's the deal: Don't wait until you're parched to start guzzling down fluids. Pack a reusable water bottle (bonus points for one that keeps it icy cold!) and sip on it regularly throughout the round. Aim for more than just a few gulps at each water station – consistent hydration is key.

5. Embrace the Power of Shade

The sun is a glorious orb, sure, but on a scorching day, it can be your worst nightmare. Seek out shade whenever possible. Time your tee times for the cooler mornings or evenings if you can.

Walking the course? Utilize any shade provided by trees, cart paths, or even your trusty umbrella. Remember, a little shade goes a long way in preventing heatstroke and keeping your energy levels up.

4. Pack a Summer Survival Kit

Think of it as your personal oasis against the heat. Here are some essentials to toss in your golf bag:

Cooling Towel

A damp towel works wonders for wiping away sweat and keeping your head and neck cool.

Sunscreen

Apply a generous amount of broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before you hit the course, and reapply every two hours, or more often if you're sweating. Don't forget those often-missed spots like your ears and the back of your neck.

Hat

The Pyramid Golf Hat is your best friend on a sunny day. It protects your face, ears, and scalp from the sun's harmful rays and helps keep you cool.

Sunglasses

Protect your eyes from the sun's glare and UV rays with a good pair of polarized sunglasses.

3. Refuel Smart (No, Not with Hot Dogs)

Just like your car needs gas, your body needs fuel to perform. But greasy hot dogs and sugary sodas won't do you any favors in the heat. Pack healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, and energy bars to keep your energy levels steady and avoid that dreaded afternoon slump.

2. Listen to Your Body

This one's simple: If you're feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or excessively fatigued, don't be a hero. Take a break, find some air conditioning, and rehydrate. Pushing yourself too hard in the heat can lead to serious health problems.

Remember, it's okay to call it a day and come back another time when the weather is more forgiving.

1. Embrace the Shotgun Start (Sometimes)

Let's face it, a traditional 18-hole round under the summer sun can feel like an eternity. Consider a shotgun start with your buddies to shorten your time on the course and minimize your exposure to the heat. Plus, it can add a fun twist to your usual golfing routine.

Beat the Heat, Conquer the Course

With these tips in your pocket and a little planning, you can conquer the summer heat and keep your golf game sizzling in a good way. Remember, staying hydrated, dressing smart, and listening to your body are key. Now, get out there, embrace the sunshine (responsibly!), and show that summer heat who's boss!

Summer Golfing FAQ

What if I forget sunscreen?

Don't be a hero! Most courses have pro shops that sell sunscreen. Ask around and see if you can snag a small bottle to tide you over.

Can I drink sports drinks instead of water?

While sports drinks can be helpful for replenishing electrolytes lost through sweat, water should still be your primary source of hydration. Sports drinks can be sugary, so consume them in moderation.

What are some signs of heatstroke?

If you experience severe headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or confusion, seek medical attention immediately. These could be signs of heatstroke, a serious medical condition.

Baseball style hats are almost useless. Better to wear a broad brimmed hat that protects the face, ears, AND back of the neck. Pick a hat with the widest possible brim. Who cares if it looks a bit weird. Scars from skin cancer surgery are not attractive either. It’s your choice. “Style” or safety.
